Day of action following C&G announcement…
[30 Mar 2004]
The announcement by C&G that it is to pilot transferring 50 jobs to India prompted action from LTU at all the company’s main operations.

LTU’s campaign to protect UK jobs attracted considerable media attention in Scunthorpe, Gloucester, Warwickshire, Fareham and across the country.

Scunthorpe
In Scunthorpe around 420 staff work for C&G and LTU officials handed newsletters and briefings to them on Tuesday 23rd March. Simon Reynolds, Asst. Secretary was also on hand in the centre to answer any questions from concerned LTU members.

Earlier in the day LTU petitioners met customers of the Bank outside their branch in the High Street. A high proportion of those we spoke to condemned the Group’s plans and added their names to our petition.

Yorkshire TV interviewed Steve Tatlow, Asst. General Secretary along with customers and campaigners.

BBC Radio Humberside and Lincs. FM also joined in along with the local press.

Warwickshire
In Warwickshire a team from LTU talked to customers outside the Bank’s Parade branch near to the Tachbrook Park building, where 450 people are employed. Most customers were happy to sign a petition condemning the Groups plans.

Media interest was considerable with interviews given to 3 local newspapers as well as 2 local commercial radio stations. Peter O’Grady, Asst. Secretary was also interviewed on BBC WM’s Drivetime show that covers the whole of the West Midlands and Warwickshire.

Gloucester
In Gloucester it was a similar story, with customers signing a petition outside Eastgate branch. In the early evening ITV Central covered the story from outside the Barnwood building whilst LTU officials were handing newsletters to staff.

Fareham
Lloyds TSB customers in Fareham, where 500 are employed by C&G, were equally vociferous against the plans and the story was covered by the Southampton Echo.
