<<< back LTU Goes to ‘TOON’ Over Closure of Newcastle Call Centre! [10 Dec 2003] Our campaign in Newcastle attracted strong media attention during the 3 days of 26th–28th November. Over 20,000 local people added their support to our campaign to stop the closure of Lloyds TSB’s Newcastle Call Centre by signing LTU’s petition. One of those petitioners was local MP Jim Cousins seen here (top picture) outside the Haymarket branch in Newcastle. Jim is one of seven North-East MPs who have signed a Commons motion calling on the Government to take action to tackle the growing threat to British jobs from moving call centres overseas. Local Press, Radio and TV provided extensive coverage and we received a huge response from Newcastle United fans outside St. James’s Park both before and after their match against Basel. LTU official Peter O’Grady provided a number of TV and Radio interviews outlining the Union’s case. He stressed the underlying message that a UK focussed company with few global interests should remain loyal to its UK staff and customers. On Wednesday 3rd December Newcastle City Council added its weight to the campaign. The Council is actively considering a move to recover the £230,000 provided to Lloyds TSB for staff training when the Call Centre opened 3 years ago. Council leader Tony Flynn gave interviews to Tyne Tees and BBC News as he joined LTU outside the Bank’s Grey Street Branch. <<< back |
