<<< back Legal challenge attracts national media interest… [19 Aug 2004] As previously reported, Lloyds TSB’s plans to transfer work to India are facing a legal challenge from one of the bank’s customers on the grounds that they infringe Data Protection requirements. The customer is receiving the support of LTU’s Solicitors. LTU believes that India does not have the same stringent standards of data protection that are legally required by the Data Protection Act 1998. European legislation states that sensitive personal data cannot be moved outside the European Economic Area without the express consent of customers. Furthermore, Solicitors acting on behalf of the customer suggest that this permission must have to be given in writing. Data held by financial services companies are certainly among the most sensitive being transferred abroad today and the information contained in standing orders, direct debits and credit and debit card transactions provides a considerable insight into the private lives of customers. At a time when identity theft is a growing problem both nationally and internationally customers are understandably concerned. Media interest… This case has generated considerable media activity locally and nationally. In addition to interest from Radio 4 and Reuters, all the following newspapers also covered the story: Financial Times Daily Telegraph The Times The Guardian The Daily Mirror The Scotsman … and countless other local Newspapers And, on a day that once again saw LTU teams gathering more signatures for the Union’s petition in those areas most at risk of large job losses, LTU’s campaign also received extensive local TV and radio coverage from both the BBC and local radio stations. And as if that wasn’t enough, LTU’s campaign has gone international. Interviews with LTU were broadcast on a network of 300 radio stations across the United States and the Dow Jones Newswire.
